Biotech Sector Analysis

Published 5/8/08:  We would like to point out to subscribers that the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) is right around the corner, set to take place May 30 through June 3 in Chicago.  However, as opposed to years past, for the first time the abstracts that are going to be presented at this year’s ASCO meeting are going to be made available to everyone—not just ASCO members—ahead of the meeting.  This should help greatly in leveling the playing field by not allowing a select few to trade on information that not everyone has access to.  The abstracts are going to be published on the ASCO website, www.asco.org, at 6:00 p.m. Pacific time on Thursday, May 15.

To be clear, not all abstracts will be made available ahead of time.  As we understand it, certain key abstracts, such as the ones that will be discussed during high-profile plenary sessions, will be embargoed until at least the time that the ASCO meeting commences.  (The survival data from the Phase 3 FLEX trial of ImClone’s Erbitux is one such example of information that will not be seen on May 15.)  However, a number of our recommended companies are going to be presenting data at this year’s ASCO meeting that will become public information one week from today. In addition to ImClone, these will include Allos, ArQule, Cell Genesys, Genentech, GenVec, Incyte, and Onyx.  Thus, we will be busy scouring the available abstracts, and intend to issue a Special Update sometime on Friday, May 16 if the data dictate that it is necessary.  Our guess is that they will, and also that Friday, May 16 could prove to be an exciting close to the trading week, particularly for many of the stocks of companies working in the cancer treatment arena.  Stay tuned!

What Do People Say About MTSL?

'Please accept my thanks for providing the help that even those of us whose careers are in biotechnology require to navigate towards investment success.  I look forward to future issues and to a long relationship with The Medical Technology Stock Letter.'

Arnold D. Gale, M.D., FAAP

'After reading hundreds of financial newsletters every week for over 20 years, I can tell you that the Medical Technology Stock Letter is one of just a small handful of newsletters that I consider a must-read for all serious growth investors. In terms of knowledge, expertise and advice on biotechnology stocks, John McCamant is quite simply the very best in the business.'
